Traditional
renovated residence
in Kostos
This project was a tempting one!! It is located in the rural region of Kostos, at the center of the island. The goal was to keep the original structure, a typical example of vernacular architecture of the Cycladic islands and add the elements that the new owners wanted to intergrade. A large corner window in order to have a view to the garden and the mountains and a jacuzzi.
We kept the threshing area, the so called ‘aloni’ and it serves as a secondary terrace, the trees around like the lemon and orange trees, the mulberry trees, a large locust tree, and all the very old Juniperus Turbinata that provide shade to the outdoor living space from spring to fall seasons, while the nearby jacuzzi offers additional comfort and luxury.
Interior floors are handmade Moroccan tiles, laid with different designs that fitted the uneven rooms. Then they were treated with antic wax for best waterproofing. For the outdoor areas we bought lime stones and the masons sliced and polished them by hand, as no existing natural stones would fit the old stone walls.
For the ceilings we brought old beams from a ruined winery from the island of Samos and combined them with local cane, in the same way the old ceilings would be constructed. We have plastered a part of the structure, with historical plaster material, same like Archaeologists use.
We are very proud of this project in its last detail and the outcome you can see in the photos!!
